INQUIRE

“When the climbers in 1953 planted their flags on the highest mountain, they set them in snow over the skeletons of creatures that had lived in the warm clear ocean that India, moving north, blanked out. Possibly as much as twenty thousand feet below the seafloor, the skeletal remains had turned into rock. This one fact is a treatise in itself on the movements of the surface of the earth. If by some fiat I had to restrict all this writing to one sentence, this is the one I would choose: The summit of Mt. Everest is marine limestone.” – John McPhee, Annals of the Former World

The landscape is abstract. Heat rises. The painter exists in real space, but out of time. Human is temporal, fleeting. The room is in motion. Lines are invisible and color is eternal.

Denny Dimin Gallery is pleased to announce High Earth, a solo exhibition by Luke Diiorio, on view from March 14th to April 14th, 2019. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery and will feature a new body of paintings, housed in an immersive installation.

Diiorio is influenced by and works fluently in the language of minimalism. As Alex Bacon observed in The Brooklyn Rail, “While much has been made of the supposed resurgence of work coming out of the legacy of minimalism, Diiorio is one of the few actively pushing forward the concerns of that particular genre.”

Luke Diiorio was born in 1983 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and lives in Virginia and New York. Diiorio received his MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art in London and his BA in Philosophy from Lehigh University. The artist has had solo exhibitions at Pippy Houldsworth Gallery, London; Sunday-S Gallery, Copenhagen; and Art Basel Hong Kong, with Pippy Houldsworth Gallery. Diiorio’s work has been featured or reviewed in The Brooklyn Rail, Art in America, Interview, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times.
