“Crying Non-Stop”
Performance by IV Chan
Saturday, October 15th, 3-4 pm

Location: Denny Dimin Gallery, Hong Kong
No. 612 Remex Center, No. 42 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Hong Kong

Denny Dimin Gallery is delighted to announce a one-off performance by artist IV Chan whose work is currently on view as part of the group exhibition, The Thread is Not Straight at the gallery’s space in Wong Chuk Hang. The performance continues Chan’s ideas on the formation of identity in childhood, with the focus on the complex relationship arc between the child and its immediate surroundings including its objects, environment, and mother figure. The multimedia performance sees Chan collate sound, poetry, fabricated props and costume to create an immersive and nostalgic installation. Chan states that through the poetry and performance, the audience will be infused with “short recollections that resonate the fantasies of an imaginary child”. Through this, the artist touches on dreams and fears of childhood in a whimsical yet visceral experience.

The performance will take place on Saturday,  October 15th at 3pm. Please arrive promptly so as not to disrupt the performance. Denny Dimin Gallery, Hong Kong is located at No. 612 Remex Center, No. 42 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Hong Kong.

About the Artist

IV Chan (1978) uses her practice as a way of exploring the complexities of the human body and soul through sculptures, installations and performances. She sees our corporeal existence as tragic and ludicrous; sordid and pure. While inspecting her own problematic bodily experiences, she is fascinated by the interrelationship between original sin and its catharsis with a focus on the mother and child complex. Her tactile and somewhat playful sculptures touch upon the breadth of bodily experience and the metaphysical. She employs a range of techniques to piece together these interwoven narratives and concepts where textile and material is manipulated, sewn, punctured and stuffed while coming into contact with an array of media from beading to wax.

Chan has received BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, a Post Graduate Diploma in Visual Art from Goldsmiths University of London and an MFA from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Chan was selected to be an artist in residence at Tai Kwun in late 2021 which resulted in a performance of her work Inside/Outside (What my mother did not tell me) at the JC Cube, Tai Kwun. She was also part of the studio visit program at ParaSite during the pandemic and has exhibited at Oi Street Art Space, Sothebys Hong Kong, Osage Gallery, Hong Kong and in exhibitions in China mainland and Taiwan.
